The first age rating for The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom has arrived, and yes, it looks like we’ll be playing as, um, Link?
Back in June, during Nintendo’s annual summer direct, the developer announced something we’ve all been waiting for years: a Zelda game in which you can play as the titular princess. Echoes of Wisdom is clearly doing something different with the formula, as Zelda won’t be picking up a sword, but a special wand that will allow her to copy pretty much anything, so that’s clearly going to be more of a mystery, but it’s still thrilling to see her get a mainline title all to herself. Except, well, it won’t be entirely hers, because Gematsu I noticed that he was playing ESRB age rating increased, and the rating summary indicates that yes, Link, the series’ protagonist, is playable.

“This is an adventure game in which players take on the role of Zelda as she attempts to resolve the rifts throughout Hyrule and rescue Link,” begins the synopsis, which seems to be in line with what we all know so far. “From a ¾-overhead perspective, players explore various environments while battling stylized enemies (e.g., humans, creatures). As Link, players use a sword and arrows to defeat enemies; Zelda can use a magic wand to summon creatures (e.g., clockwork knights, pig soldiers, slimes) into battle.”

It’s the second last line that confirms Link is playable, but honestly, I think there’s a uncomplicated explanation for that. In the gameplay trailer, it all starts with Link doing his usual sword-fighting tricks, facing off against Ganon and more, and I imagine that segment will be playable. It’s always possible he’ll be playable in other parts as well, but considering the whole point is to save him, I think it’ll just be in this first part as setup.
Either way, we won’t have to wait too long to find out, as the game is set to release on September 26, just a few months away — and as usual, it’ll only be available on Nintendo Switch.
