Yes, EA has finally confirmed that a Sims movie is in the works, but perhaps more surprisingly, it has said that there will be no Sims 5

Sul Sul! It’s official, Sims fans: a movie based on the beloved life simulator is in the works, with Barbie’s Margot Robbi and Loki’s Kate Herron at the helm.

Back in March of this year, reports surfaced that, fresh off the success of Barbie , its producer and star Margot Robbie was looking to the world of video games for one of her next projects, specifically a live-action adaptation of The Sims . Well, today, EA itself confirmed the news that the film is in the works, with Amazon MGM Studios lending a hand in the project. As previously reported, Kate Herron, best known for directing the first season of Loki , will direct the Sims movie and co-write it with Briony Redman (the two previously wrote an episode of Doctor Who together). “It’s too early to share more about the film, but stay tuned for updates as we celebrate our 25th anniversary next year,” EA wrote in a statement blog post announcing the news.

Robbie’s production company LuckyChap is teaming up with Vertigo Entertainment to produce the project alongside EA, but as long as viewers don’t have to fork out an extra £30 for the Movie Night expansion pack, there shouldn’t be any issues. Herron also seems like a great fit for something like The Sims. While some fans weren’t fans of Loki’s relationship with his alternate universe, gender-fluid version of himself Sylvie, Herron’s direction made the absurdity of it all work, so I imagine he’ll be able to handle the strange world of The Sims.

In the statement provided DiversityThe Sims franchise manager Kate Gorman said, “You’ll see a lot of elements of The Sims universe come to life, and a lot of the classic experiences that our players experience in the games come to life in the film,” and that she is “sure there’s a pool with no ladder in there somewhere.”

What’s more surprising to gaming fans is the fact that EA isn’t actually working on a Sims 5 game, as Gorman revealed Diversity that while previous Sims games were replacements for previous ones, EA “will not be working on replacements for previous projects; we will just be adding to our universe. So you’ll see there are more ways to experience The Sims across platforms, different ways to play, transmedia, and a lot of great offerings in that universe.”

When asked to clarify if this means there will be no Sims 5, she said, “it’s not Sims 5 as a replacement for 4. It means we’re going to continue to deliver the HD simulation and what people expect from 5.” Gorman noted that this will allow players to keep all of their creations, expansions, packs, etc., which many have spent a lot of money on over the course of The Sims 4’s 10-year history.

Online, meanwhile, will be a major focus for The Sims 4 going forward, as part of the still-mysterious Project Rene, with EA promising more details coming soon and sharing that you can sign up to test the project right now. While the future of The Sims isn’t 100% clear, there’s at least a lot to look forward to.
