Monolith Soft, the creator of the Xenoblade Chronicles series and the main development studio behind Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is now wholly owned by Nintendo.
Though it has been around for almost two and a half decades, Monolith Soft has mostly gained fame over the last 10 years thanks to the Xenoblade Chronicles series, and for good reason. These are forceful, powerful RPGs that come together in a really fun way, and the developer has clearly proven itself as a forceful studio over the years, offering support for a whole range of titles like Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and more Splatoon games. Now, as reported Machineit appears that Monolith Soft is wholly owned by Nintendo, which probably won’t have the slightest impact on the overall state of affairs, but of course it makes sense.

Nintendo has owned 96% of Monolith Soft’s shares since 2011, with the last 4% symbolically held by the company’s founders, except that, as seen on Monolith Soft’s website, Mario’s producer now owns it outright. In many cases, one company owning another company can be a huge deal, but Monolith hasn’t even released a game on a non-Nintendo platform since 2006’s Xenosaga Episode 3 on the PS2. So yes, you can probably expect everything to stay as is on both Nintendo and Monolith Soft.
It’s unclear at this point whether Monolith is working on something completely original – however, we do know that Xenoblade Chronicles This will also likely be one of the last major titles to come to the Switch, considering that Switch 2, or whatever it’s called, will definitely be released next year.
