I had a great time playing XDefiant upon release: it was a free-to-play hero shooter with a lot of Call of Duty running through its veins, and it was quite good, but not popular enough to bypass the live service graveyard. Ubisoft announced earlier this year that XDefiant would be shutting down in 2025, and executive producer Mark Rubin just announced that the final content update is now available.
“This is obviously a bittersweet moment, but I just want to say how proud I am of everyone on this team who did everything they could to create this game and all of its amazing content” – Rubin he said on X.
The patch contains a few surprises. Lots of surprises, actually.
“Not only did Ubisoft allow a small team to stay and continue working on delivering Season 3 content, but we were also able to add some additional content from future seasons to this release,” Rubin said. The update includes factions and maps that we have been working on not only in Season 3, but also in the upcoming seasons, up to Season 8.
The patch includes several up-to-date factions, 13 maps, a up-to-date bomb defusal mode, AI bots to play against, up-to-date weapons, up-to-date cosmetic items that can be unlocked for free, and much more.
“All this and more is our final tribute to all the hard-working people who made this game, and to all the fans who have been with us on this journey,” Rubin said. “Not all journeys end well, but we can all be proud of what we have accomplished.”
