From August World of Warcraft guilds have been reporting a disturbing bug: their guild banks, where every guild member can store resources, items, and even the rarest loot in the game (like mounts), have been wiped. Is completely emptied or simply missing itemsusers reported that the fruits of their labor were disappearing into slender air. Since September, Blizzard’s response has left many players holding their heads in their hands.
Some items will never be recovered
Linxy Community Manager he said in a blog post on the Blizzard forums that the main problem was caused by allowing cross-realm guilds. As part Internal warMany restrictions on players’ ability to play, trade, and share across factions and realms have been lifted, allowing players to enjoy a more collaborative experience.
But that convenience comes at a price. “Due to how some of the data was lost, we’ve reached a point where the result will be incomplete restoration for some guilds, and we don’t have a way to restore the remaining missing items,” Linxy says. Losing data is a back-end developer’s worst nightmare, especially when that data could be 19-year-old mounts, collectibles, and items that can no longer be obtained in-game.
This affected community, needless to say, is in ruins. The bug didn’t affect everyone, but those who were affected, at worst, lost almost two decades of hidden items. The best we can hope for is some form of compensation for those affected, but without data showing which items were lost, it really won’t be possible to recover this history.
