Star Wars Jedi fans, myself included, got some good news from EA’s Investor Relations presentation on Tuesday regarding the future of the series. According to Video Game Chroniclethe company is working on a third game that is set to be the “final chapter in this exciting story” after Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order AND Star Wars Jedi: Survivortwo games starring original character (and one of my favorite Star Wars redheads) Cal Kestis. But despite the word “survivor” in the title of the latest game, the wider Star Wars universe likely doesn’t have good things in store for Cal.
Cal Kestis may have avoided Order 66, but given the time period in which he exists, his days as a Jedi on the wrong side of the Empire are numbered. Furthermore, like many other Star Wars characters invented to exist in time periods that precede New hopewe already know he won’t be at any of those events. (And we can only hope he won’t be included in any of them. No one is asking for that. No one!)
But that doesn’t mean his story and its ending can’t be fascinating. Villain 1 proved that stories about heroes who are willing to die for their cause – even though the audience knows in advance that this is what they will do – can be just as moving and narratively affluent as stories where the ending is harder to guess.
I guess what I’m saying is that if Cal Kestis has to die, I’m excited to see how it plays out. Does that sound weird? Whatever.
