The release of the REDkit modding tools opened The Witcher 3 like a Christmas goose, resulting in finds like an extended version of the ending where Yennefer makes a shocking betrayal. Less plot-critical but still pretty frigid, modder MerseyRockoff found the audio and text files for a cut questline that allowed Geralt to take part in a series of boat races, and set about recreating them.
As MerseyRockoff notes, “all of the conversations, characters, notifications, and journal entries in the mod were originally written by CDPR, but I recreated and brought them to life using REDkit,” meaning the Boat Races mod feels like a seamless fusion with The Witcher 3, with Geralt having fully voiced conversations with race organizers and various townspeople about the sailing competition, as well as eavesdropping on essential conversations on the street.
The races themselves let you choose to represent Novigrad or Redania, the sponsors of the event, in four tournaments: Novigrad Regatta, Oxenfurt Regatta, Helmsman’s Dash, and Rally of the Wrecks. In each, you race between burning wooden checkpoints, and if you win, you’ll be rewarded with a bundle of cash and experience points.
To install Boat Racing Modyou need to place the modBoatRaces folder in the Mods subdirectory of your Witcher 3 installation, and the dlcBoatRaces folder in the DLC folder of your installation. Then run Script connection to check for conflicts and you’re off to the races. Check out our list of the best Witcher 3 mods to learn more.
