At the end of last year I found out that puzzles exist Good, Actually. Yes, the impetus was the COVID quarantine, but even after my wife and I didn’t force ourselves to stay at home, we still found time for a good puzzle every few weeks. IN Wilmot figures it outthe titular Wilmot no longer spends time in the warehouse, but in his home. He has joined the Puzzle of the Week club and must complete it the same way he managed his ancient warehouse. The music is delicate and airy, and there’s a lovely story about the postal workers who deliver your puzzles. Unlike the first part of the game, there is no time pressure; just puzzle after puzzle.
These puzzles start with just 9 pieces and don’t go beyond that. The tricky thing is that deliveries often contain extra pieces intended for next week’s or last week’s puzzle, giving you some red herrings to sort out. This elegantly avoids the really overwhelming start you have to face when starting a puzzle, while still allowing you to solve it yourself. This is extremely critical because one of the advantages of solving puzzles is how self-contained they are: you can collect edge pieces, organize them by color, or simply hunt for that particular piece you need.
Although these are not puzzles that you can touch while putting them together WOW it is still satisfactorily tactile. When you find the right pieces, they connect together to create one piece. You’ll have to rely on the art to guide you, as all the pieces follow the same modest square shape as Wilmot himself (which are oriented in the right direction, with no need to rotate). After a few “seasons” of puzzles, the simpler early-game graphics give way to intricate, intricate designs that will test pattern matching and even tell little “jokes” through the graphics.
Meaning, Wilmot figures it out it will capture that same “AHA” moment when you find the item you were looking for and everything falls into place.
