Why does this Star Wars game make me so hungry?

Star Wars: Outlaws gives you a ton of stuff to do that immerses you in that galaxy far, far away. Sabacc! Speeder racing! Smuggling illegal goods! The quests and loot are expected in a massive open-world game, but what I didn’t expect were the extravagant food sequences. It turns out that the player character Kay is quite the foodie!

In four different worlds in Star Wars: Outlawsplayers can sit at a droid-operated food stand and feast on a unique dish of local cuisine. There’s alien popcorn on the cob, ice-coated eels, and curries hotter than an livid Gamorrean. Each meal begins with a frisky droid chef chopping up ingredients and cooking them like Monster Hunter: Worldbefore he shows you his plate like a Maître d’.

Interestingly, these aren’t just cutscenes: you have to grab your space fork and eat! You’ll go through straightforward quick-time events during your meal to take bites of your kebab or drink some water after too much seasoning. You’ll do the same for your adorable companion Nix, who’s enjoying his meal right next to you. It can be a really touching moment for you and your little buddy, and a nice break from the tension of the theft. It’s also sporadic to get such an in-depth look at food in Star Wars, which for a certain type of nerd (me) is a huge treat, especially when every meal seems to hold its own surprises.

Of course, this is a video game, so you could be forgiven for wondering if there’s any gameplay purpose to searching for those food carts, and the answer is a resounding yes. Each meal grants you a bonus for Nix, some of which can be a huge boon in your missions: one lets Nix distract multiple enemies at once, while another can cause enemies to start firing their blasters at random (you can switch between the two later).

So next time you’re wandering around Mos Eisley or Kijimi City, take a break and eat like the locals!
