Which Nintendo console had the biggest premiere?

Published:

Nintendo predicted that he was selling 15 million Switch 2s this year. Analysts believe that the number is conservative; Nintendo claims that the price of switch 2 is what stops the estimates. But what does that really mean? Is this a reasonable goal? If Nintendo hits him, does this guarantee that switch 2 will be a huge hit? If the console sells during the premiere, what does this tell us? Is there still a chance for a Wii -style flop?

You can’t know for sure, but looking at all previous premieres of the Nintendo console can be some tips. I reached the Nintendo sales figurines to determine which Nintendo consoles enjoyed the best premieres. To get a more reliable image than the initial, almost inevitable sale, I defined the premiere as the first year of the console (or rather the first four financial quarters) on the market.

It should be remembered that Nintendo began to report quarterly sales for its systems in mid -2000, and the earliest data is at best annual and hard to get, so some of these numbers are approximate. It should also be noted that older systems have come to a start in three main markets (Japan, North America and Europe), sometimes for several years, slowing down their potential sales.

Despite this, there are surprising results here, which introduced 15 million Nintendo forecasts for Switch 2 in context. Selling that many units would definitely not be bad news-but also do not indicate a crack.

There is a clear pattern for the two fastest Nintendo sellers; They were the successors of huge hits (Game Boy and DS) on the portable market, where Nintendo enjoyed complete dominance. Nintendo was so stubborn in terms of Game Boy Advance, after a decade of the Game Boy format, that Forecasts a amazing 24 million sales In the first year, while 3DS followed the largest Nintendo seller in history. They both sold well, but none of them lived to their ancestors.

Switch and Wii are the only Nintendo consoles with the sale of over 10 million in the first year AND Over 100 million during their lives. The district for a quarter, both sold extremely consistently with time. Certainly Nintendo would like to look like all his equipment, and how he hopes with Switch 2.

It is a surprise that DS did not start stronger, taking into account the uncontrolled early sale of its portable predecessor, Game Boy Advance. But his premieres were not the best and strange console project took some time to find his final, free audience. In the fifth quarter – holidays 2005 – suddenly started.

Two Nintendo home consoles made during PlayStation promoted enjoyed quite powerful premieres, but developed due to lack of software. Gamecube sold 30% of the total whole in the first year of sales – an unfortunate achievement, which even overcomes the gloomy indicator of Wii U.

The legend of Game Boy is that it was an immediate breakdown, thanks to the takeover of high rates Tetris. But although his premiere was vigorous for now, she did not start to indicate what the defining Nintendo conveyor would achieve – sales in the first year (before it reached Europe) is only 3% of what will sell in Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

The latest (but not the worst) flop Nintendo began quite strongly, changing over 3 million pieces in the first quarter-but then suffered a catastrophic decline, selling less than 900,000 worldwide for the rest of the first year on sale. Looking beyond the initial holiday sale, the signs of the disaster were clear.

Both early Nintendo consoles in Japan started in Japan, but it took a long time to start in the West. NES did not fully start in the USA and Europe until 1986, among the caution after the video game disaster in the 1980s, while SNES was beaten on the market in the West by Sega Genesis and suffered.

You can’t get a worse premiere than interrupting a year of sales!

What does this mean for the premiere of Switch 2?

If Nintendo reaches or exceeds its goal of 15 million Switch 2s sold in the first budget year, it will be among the best Prime Minister Nintendo Console. The Wii -style flop looks very unlikely, unless sales drops rapidly after the first months.

But the most meaningful comparisons are the two best premieres of Nintendo: Game Boy Advance and 3DS. Like Switch 2, both were conservative, simple to understand continuations for huge sellers in the Nintendo market sector had complete control. And although they both reached a respectable sum of life, they did not approach the lives of their more novel predecessors.

Could it be the fate of Switch 2? Judging by the history of the premiere of Nintendo, it is possible – maybe even likely.
