As the premier, one-stop digital multiplayer store for PCs, Steam has dominated the market for approximately 20 years. It’s a convenient place to buy and play games online, and it’s uncomplicated to see why, but all the sales and discounts that take place throughout the year make it even more attractive.
Even though we’ve just started the Fall Sale, Steam isn’t quite ready for 2024. As we approach the final weeks of the year, there’s one more event to come: the Steam Winter Sale. But when exactly does this happen?
Well, you still have some time to prepare, because according to… post from Steam listing all 2024 events, the Winter Sale will start on December 19 and end on January 2, 2025. There is also a countdown clock on the screen SteamDBwhich shows that – at the time of writing – it will officially start in just over 10 days and four hours, with the start scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Winter may be icy, but the steam may be in the warm water
As always with things like this, we can’t be sure which games will actually be on sale until closer to the date (or the day itself). The 2023 Steam Winter Sale includes titles such as: Mortal Kombat 1, Dave the diver, Red Dead Redemption 2, Elden’s Ringand even Field of Stars get ephemeral price cuts, with some games offering discounts of up to 80%.
Of course, not all bells ring. Steam’s owner and developer, Valve, is currently embroiled in an antitrust lawsuit. The lawsuit was recently upgraded to “class action” status, with the filings pointing out that the company’s 30% commission on games sold through its platform (vs. 12% of the Epic Games Store) is “anti-competitive”.
With that said, we players don’t have to worry too much about it right now. We’re approaching the 2024 Steam Winter Sale, and with it the closing moments of a rather dismal year for the industry. Leave with a smile and more games in your library, I guess.
