What do you get when you combine Dave Bautista, Channing Tatum, Cate Blanchett and a whole host of other massive names? A 1950s biker movie where the bikers are actually alien invaders

Published:

Dave Bautista just joined a movie about a group of alien invaders who disguise themselves as a 1950s biker gang, and he’s just the front runner of the leading cast.

You probably don’t know David and Nathan Zellner, but considering the massive cast of their next film Apha Gang, you probably will soon. According to Hollywood reporterGuardians of the Galaxy and Knock at the Cabin actor Dave Bautista has joined the project, and there’s a long list of other names joining him, including Channing Tatum (Deadpool and Wolverine), Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings), Steven Yeun (Invincible), Zoe Kravitz (The Batman), Lea Sydoux (Death Stranding) and Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road). That’s a lot of star power in one movie, packaged into a pretty fun-sounding concept.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Alpha Gang takes place “in heightened reality” and follows alien invaders who came to earth in the 1950s, disguised as a gang of bikers, setting out to conquer the planet. Everything begins to unravel when the aliens learn about the fickle thing we humans like to call emotions, and Blanchett will apparently play Alpha One, the leader of the alien group.

While you probably haven’t heard of the Zellner brothers before, there’s a chance you’ve already heard of their work – they’re probably best known for the 2014 film Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter, a film based on an urban legend about a Japanese woman who believed that Fargo is a true story as it is told, and he sets out to find the ransom money hidden within. This year they also released Sasquatch Sunset, an equally quirky film in which Keough stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg, who plays a family of sasquatches for a year. You could say the brothers’ atmosphere is “generally weird.”

Alpha Gang will soon be seen at next week’s American Film Market and there’s a lot of buzz about it, so you can probably expect A24 to quickly pick it up and pretend it’s theirs.
