Have you ever wanted to become an unpaid robot journalist intern at a space newspaper? Of course it is, thought the creators of Times and Galaxy, a raucous recent indie game in which you venture out into the hyperspace lanes in a flying newsroom to become a youthful reporter for the eponymous news publication, or “holopaper,” as they call it in the far future.
Somewhere between an adventure game and a visual novel, Times and Galaxy puts you into the action as an aspiring reporter tasked with finding news events, uncovering stories, and interviewing dozens of witnesses to uncover the best story possible. That’s a frigid thing – partly because the way you structure the story is somewhat up to you, and that can influence how it’s received.
Maybe you find the story itself uninteresting, so you go in there and come up with clickbait or yellow journalism based on outrageous quotes and implied half-truths, put up a crazy headline, and go to print. Or maybe you are a great journalist who finds the best stuff, the absolute truth and puts it in the press!
This leads to absurd situations. You’ll cover things like “intersolar cat shows, explosive toy launches, and, of course, space ghost funerals,” as well as something called the “Humanistic Dirt Fair,” which, as you might guess, has a lot of puns around the word “drawer.” and “unearthing” history.
It’s quite a amusing thing and the writers were good at it.
“I’ve written a lot of horror stories, and I must admit that the real horror is writing a comedy and waiting for someone to find it funny.” he said developer Ben Gelinas, a former newspaper reporter who turned to game development.
I’ll be truthful, I think you should check it out. If only because they dared to let him go same day as Elden Ring: The Rise of Erdtree.
We are delighted, honored and scared that our game about journalists and space freaks is released on the same day as @ELDENRING #ShadowoftheErdtree 😱Congratulations to @fromsoftware_pr, may they both have a successful launch 🤖🪐 https://t.co/sszM5mHX61 pic.twitter. com/Co0EPVVaJZJune 19, 2024
The Canadian studio Copychaser Games, founded by Gelinas, is responsible for the production of Times and Galaxy. Copychaser’s previous game, Speed Dating for Ghosts, was quite well received. Times and Galaxy is published by the independent label Fellow Traveler.
You can find Times and Galaxy on GOG, HumbleAND Couple. Is also Times and Galaxy website on the Fellow Traveler website for more details.
