One of the more contemporary games that Nightdive is remastering. The team is able to bring some of the greatest visual improvements to The Thing to date. Models, textures and environments will be improved, but there will also be recent, vigorous lighting and 4K resolutions up to 144 FPS, depending on the platform.

The team also worked with the original developers to make some gameplay improvements. One key area is the fear/trust system interface, which determines whether the AI will cooperate with or oppose you, depending on its mental state. It’s common knowledge that in the early 2000s Computer Artworks had to make some… imaginative decisions to make everything work and fit within the technical constraints of the game, and they simply designed such an open structure to work with the story. It will be captivating to see if any of this is adapted as well.

While fear and suspicion are at the core of this experience, there is also plenty of action and fighting with the terrifying monsters the Thing has transformed into.

2002’s The Thing is as close to (hopefully) being a sequel to the best movie ever made – that’s not an opinion, just a fact. Speaking of facts, John Carpenter approved this game as a sequel to his film, with various plot themes left hanging at the end. Unfortunately, despite the largely positive reception, Computer Artworks never got a chance to continue their game. It’s great to see their legacy continued in this remaster.
