It turns out that production on the Watch Dogs movie is already underway, or rather filming has already been completed.
Like the Minecraft movie and the Borderlands movie, the Watch Dogs movie has been in the works for about a decade, although unlike the Minecraft movie, which finally got a trailer last week, and the Borderlands movie, which was released last week (and was so poorly received that it was released digitally just three weeks after its theatrical release), we haven’t seen much of Ubisoft’s adaptation. We haven’t seen anything, actually, although there was some casting news earlier this year, as well as one bit this week. Along with that came a tweet from Ubisoft confirming that filming for the Watch Dogs film adaptation has completely wrapped, though I somehow missed the fact that production had even begun.

I guess that’s what happens when Ubisoft spends 10 years trying to make a movie – there’s only so much time someone can devote to production schedules. Apparently Ubisoft actually announced production started this summerbut let me repeat, there hasn’t been a game in four years (the AAA gaming industry is doing well, thanks for asking), so general knowledge of the series isn’t at an all-time high.

Ubisoft has recently been suffering some losses, as its stock price dropped last week, prompting one of its investors to write a letter to the company stating that he wants the developer to go private in order to “inject some life” into Ubisoft’s games — which would apparently involve more layoffs, which is certainly the way to make good games (via Rock-paper shotgun). The letter specifically mentions Watch Dogs as a title that has “slept for years” despite being “loved by millions of gamers around the world.” As far as anyone knows, a up-to-date Watch Dogs game is not in development, which is an odd choice considering there’s a movie in the works.
There’s no release date set for the film yet, so like the games, Watch Dogs is on hold. In the meantime, you’ll have to play it again.
