Warner Bros. Games has acquired Player First Games, the developer of the crossover platform game MultiVersus. The sale price was not disclosed, but according to press releasePlayer First Games will continue to operate under its current leadership of co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White.
The announcement is coming just a few months after MultiVersus’ May 28th relaunch, Player First Games served as the contract studio for the game’s development, and Warner Bros. is apparently pleased with the results formally transfer the studio to the company. The move comes just days after Warner Bros. the entire mobile branch was closed NetherRealm Studios, creators of Mortal Kombat.
“We have worked with Player First Games for several years to build and launch MultiVersus, and we are very pleased to welcome this talented team to Warner Bros. Games,” said David Haddad, President, Warner Bros. Games. “The brilliant and creative team at Player First Games enhances our broad capabilities for growth.”
“Our team is excited to join the Warner Bros. Games family and we think it will be a great fit for MultiVersus overall,” said Huynh. “We’re working to make the MultiVersus experience the best it can be, and the integration of our development team with the publisher is optimal for players.”
MultiVersus is a 2v2 spin on Super Smash Bros. that pits various characters from across Warner Bros.’ franchises against each other. It was first released in open beta in 2022 (read our review of that version here ), then scrapped a few months later to be revamped and expanded before returning this year. MultiVersus recently began its second season of content and has received novel fighters like The Joker, Agent Smith, Jason Voorhees, and the recently announced Samurai Jack and Beetlejuice.
