Created by Evil Gingerbread Studios and Venris, creator of the Total War: Warhammer 3 SFO mod, Whispers Of The Eyeless is about developing a terrible cult beneath a rather horrible city in order to resurrect three dead gods: Wrath, Desire and Madness. It’s a strategy RPG with dim, fairytale graphics reminiscent of Darkest Dungeon, turn-based combat and a bit of base and army building. Other inspirations include Loop Hero, Children Of Morta and Polish folklore in general.
“Take on the role of the last descendant of the Old Faith and the First Prophet of the New Era in the city of Aranthor, where the new and old gods fight for power,” it says. description on Steam“Defeated, exiled, and nearly forgotten, the Dead Gods lay silent for generations. But finally… the Whispers have returned. The “Dead” Gods are not dead, and it is up to you to restore them to their full glory.”
Said city is ruled by various initiates of the Living Gods and is divided into districts with distinct enemies, local culture, and history. Each district is home to a “branching web of events.” You’ll apparently explore it alone as the cult leader — there’s no squad-based combat in the trailer — but you can recruit people as cultists and ordain them as disciples who can be sent out on missions.
There’s also the question of which specific Dead God you favor, with implications that include various decorations for your subterranean space villain lair. “Upgrade your base, bestow divine blessings, and make offerings to the Dead Gods to strengthen your cult and increase your power in the city as Prophet,” the description continues. “The God you favor will affect the appearance of your Sanctuary, which you can customize to your liking.”
According to publisher Camlann Games, Whispers Of The Eyeless is in “very late stages of development” and will enter Steam Early Access in Q4 2024 or Q1 2025 — in other words, slow winter or early next spring. You can expect a demo at one of Valve’s upcoming Steam Next Fests — in October 2024 or February 2025. Hopefully, the launch trailer’s narrative will be a fading memory by then.
