Vampire Survivors’ Dev Poncle Outlines the Challenges of a Film Adaptation: ‘The Game Has No Plot’

Published:

Vampire Survivors creator Poncle described the difficulties of the adaptation, which was originally billed as an animated series but now appears to be a film, with the headline being that “the game has no plot.”

Poncle said he is “still working with Story Kitchen on the action film” in Couple post despite the adaptation being announced as an animated series in 2023. Regardless, Poncle has now admitted how hard it will be to make a good movie, especially since Vampire Survivors is a mechanically uncomplicated action game about defeating hordes of enemies.

“As we mentioned last year, rather than jumping around and doing things just for the sake of doing it, we preferred to wait until we found partners that were a good fit for us, especially since making anything that isn’t a Vampire Survivors video game requires good ideas , creativity and quirky knowledge of the game,” Poncle said.

“It’s a very difficult three to get 100% right. Please remember that the game has no story – right? – so no one can predict what a movie about her will look like. That’s part of what makes it exciting.”

Remember that the game has no plot.

The irony of this was not lost on Poncle after the adaptation was announced, sarcastically saying, “the most important thing about Vampire Survivors is the story.” It’s unclear how the game will be adapted, even to Poncle, so a release date has yet to be announced.

Vampire Survivors is a fast-paced and over-the-top gothic horror game with a rogue-lite twist where the choices you make will quickly throw you into battle with the hundreds of monsters that will be thrown at you. It has become one of the biggest surprise hits of the last few years, as what started as a humble indie game on Steam gained traction and popularity.

Poncle soon added layers of novel content to the game, with the base experience now offering 50 playable characters and 80 weapons. This is also before the two main expansions, not to mention the Ode to Castlevania DLC.

In our 8/10 review, IGN said: “Need a game you can play while listening to podcasts? This is it. Vampire Survivors is a seemingly uncomplicated game, but it turns out to be an incredibly deep hole to fall into – although it’s not without long periods of boredom once you get past the bend.”
