Valve’s steam machine may not be as affordable as the PS5

We don’t know the price of Valve’s fresh Steam Machine, and that means it’s strenuous to say how competitive it will be with the PS5.

But the report that is circulating on the Internet Linus’s technical tips suggests that the fresh console-style hardware won’t necessarily match Sony’s system in terms of affordability.

As part of a story shared by DexertoThe YouTuber noted bad “energy” during a recent pre-launch session, alluding to the upcoming device having a “console price.”

“They asked what I meant by the price of the console, I said $500,” he said on the show WAN network demoafter meeting with Valve. “No one said anything, but the energy in the room wasn’t very high.”

Of course, this isn’t confirmation of anything: vibes aren’t announcements, and Valve employees may just be playing their best poker face.

However, given that Steam Machine is less powerful than the PS5, its overall value proposition would have to be questioned if it turns out to cost more than the Sony console.

Of course, the device still has advantages, such as its open nature and access to the huge Steam library – but as Linus Tech Tips himself points out, we think it will be a strenuous sell if it costs over $600.

To be fair, Valve probably isn’t targeting the mass market with its product anyway, so in the grand scheme of things it might not matter much. But ultimately the equipment will need to be priced, so it will be fascinating to see how much it costs.
