This isn’t the first time Valve has experimented with color. It released the Steam Deck OLED with a restricted edition smoked translucent casing, which quickly sold out (and unfortunately was susceptible to compact aesthetic cracks). This time, however, Valve says the white Deck will ship everywhere the Steam Deck is currently on sale, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe, and most recently Australia, as well as Japan and Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea for through its partner Komodo. The white deck’s supplies will be distributed “proportionally” between each region.
In an attempt to ward off scalpers, Valve limits orders to one Steam White Deck per account, and your Steam account must have at least one purchase before November 2024.
In a statement to the press, Valve said that the second restricted edition Steam Deck OLED will aid the company decide what colors to release next: “We’re curious to see what the reaction will be, and will use what we learn to inform future decisions about any potential new color variants in future.”
You don’t have to choose the restricted edition White Steam Deck to get this color. There are several companies such as Jsaux and dbrand that sell alternative backplates or skins. But if you want it straight from the source, you’ll be able to get this deck variant until Valve runs out of them.
The company also teased the future of the Deck, saying that in addition to alternate colors and constant software updates, “the future of Steam Deck and other hardware plans is in the works.”
From the photos I can see that the atmosphere of the Wii U is (in a good sense of the word) crossed with the iPod. I’m curious if the novel color scheme will be enough to convince current owners to purchase a novel system.
