If you were hoping to get in on the Steam Deck hype without shelling out for a newer model with an OLED screen, well, whatever you call it opposite about the Christmas miracle: they have been sold out and Valve no longer intends to produce them.
As written by Liam Dawe Linux gamesa disclaimer has been posted on the Steam store page that describes the various Steam Deck models: “We no longer produce the Steam Deck LCD 256GB model. Once sold out, it will no longer be available.” Reservation it’s still thereand, at least in the US, this original model has sold out for good.
It may not have the stunning, spirited colors of the OLED version, but for the price it was a real workhorse. PC Gamer’s Jeremy Laird called it a “great deal” when the price dropped a few months ago, and I’m inclined to agree with him; PC gaming has a reputation for having a high financial barrier to entry, so getting a portable version with a customized UI and docking functionality for under $400 was a pretty good deal (even with consoles on the table).
That said, there’s a novel gaming-focused handheld PC or Android that seems to be commonplace these days, and Valve has hardware ambitions that go beyond the waistline, so it makes sense that the company is simplifying its product lineup and focusing on the biggest and best models as it prepares to launch Steam Machine.
