Lord of Unicorns was first released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch on March 8, 2024. A triumph of PLN 500,000. followed shortly thereafter on April 1, at a faster pace than Vanillaware’s previous strategy/visual novel, 13 Guardians: Rim Aegis. For further comparison, 13 Guardians sales didn’t reach the million mark until almost exactly three years after its global launch.

Hopefully this just means that Vanillaware is getting proper commercial recognition that backs up all of its critical praise. A side-scrolling action RPG from 2013 Dragon Crown it has also sold over a million copies worldwide, so it’s comforting to know that George Kamitani and the rest of the band are receiving flowers.

As ATLUS emphasizes, those who want to try Lord of Unicorns they can check out a five-hour demo for themselves. The demo is available on all platforms and saved data can be transferred to the full game. As with all Vanillaware games, the graphics are absolutely stunning, and fortunately underneath it all there’s also one hell of an addictive strategy game.
