Ubisoft’s live-action piracy simulation Skull and Bones is coming to Steam in August

Skull and Bones! Ubisoft’s pirate sim wasn’t great when I tried it: a patchwork of unexciting systems that were overshadowed by all sorts of live services anyway things. Our Shaun Prescott gave it a 68% in his Skull and Bones review, while Tyler Wilde said it simply made him want to see what was going on in Sea of Thieves. Overall, these are not glowing recommendations.

And yet, admittedly, Ubisoft is still trying. After a free week and a second season of the game, the company announced that Skull and Bones will finally embark on its long journey to Steam, where it will release on August 22nd. Steam Page is available now in case you want to check it out and get excited about it.

It probably won’t be enough to make me a die-hard Skull and Bones fan, but releasing the game on a platform I don’t regret having to boot up every time I want to play it certainly won’t wounded game. On the other hand, you’ll probably just launch Ubisoft Connect from Steam.

If you’re one of those motherfuckers who averaged over four hours a day playing the game in February, you can rest assured that all of your hard-earned progress will carry over. In a follow-up tweet, Ubisoft informed the affected player that “Skull and Bones supports cross-progression, so your progress is saved to your Ubisoft account.” In low: as long as your Steam account is linked to the same Ubisoft account you were playing on up until this point, you can pick up right where you left off. Either way, once you repurchase the game.

Honestly, what I’m most interested in is seeing what the user reviews are like. This may sound like I’m joking, but the fact is that the game has been quietly developing since it came out five months ago. What’s happening as there? In that forbidden realm of a live-service game that has surely shaken off all but the most dedicated players by now? Perhaps the updates have made the game really good, and it’ll hit Steam with a rave user rating.

Or not, and I’ll get to see what else annoys people about this game in its second season. Both sound captivating to me.
