A recent Windows 11 update apparently made many Ubisoft games, including Star Wars Outlaws, unplayable.
You know what, computers are kind of annoying, right? We rely on them so much that one day one tiny update might just ruin things for no immediately noticeable reason. While playing video games isn’t the most pressing matter, one of the recent Windows 11 updates caused some pain for Ubisoft gamers as some of them became unplayable for some reason. Players have started to notice that they haven’t been able to play several Ubisoft games since the Windows 11 update last week, and now Microsoft has admitted that the update affects said games and that the problem isn’t just your hardware.

“After installing Windows 11 24H2, you may experience issues with some Ubisoft games,” explains message from Microsoft. “These games may become unresponsive during startup, loading, or while you are actively playing. In some cases, users may receive a black screen.” Microsoft even conveniently confirmed which games were affected, including: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Assassin’s Creed Origins, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Star Wars Outlaws, and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora.
Microsoft continued to explain that “to help secure the operation of Windows updates, we have applied a compatibility lock on devices where these games are installed. These devices will not be offered to install Windows 11 24H2 via the Windows Update release channel… We recommend that you do not attempt to manually update to 24H2 using the Windows 11 Setup Assistant or the media creation tool until the issue is resolved. ”
In the meantime, Ubisoft has at least released an interim patch to address the issue, noting, however, that “some performance issues may occur while we work on a more enduring fix. As soon as it is ready, we will let you know.” It might be best to put these games aside for now. I’m sure your backlog is huge enough to fill that gap.
