The “Bros” part of Super Smash Bros. has always been a mystery, but series creator Masahiro Sakurai has shed some lithe on its meaning.
For the most part, the title name Super Smash Bros. makes a lot of sense – great because, well, Super Mario, the Super Nintendo Entertainment system, Nintendo just used it a lot. Fortunately, in Masuhiro Sakurai’s latest video on his Game Development YouTube channel, the series creator talked about some of his memories of Satoru Iwata, the slow former president of Nintendo Japan. In this video he said that it was actually Iwata who helped come up with the name.
“Mr. Iwata also had a hand in coming up with the name Super Smash Bros. The team members suggested some possible names and words we could use, and then we had a meeting with Mr. Shigeto Itoi to determine what title we wanted to create. go with it, and Mr. Iwata chose the ‘brothers’ part,” Sakurai explained, as Itoi is the creator of the Earthbound/Mother series. “His reasoning was that while the heroes weren’t brothers at all, his use of the word added the nuance that they weren’t just fighting – they were friends settling a little dispute.”
