Total War: Medieval III announced on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the series – Total War engine is ready to play on consoles

Creative Assembly has announced Total War: Medieval III, a fresh historical installment in the long-running grand strategy series. So long-lasting that this announcement came on the occasion of the 25th anniversary.

Unfortunately, don’t expect this game to arrive particularly soon. Total War: Medieval 3 is currently in early pre-production, but the ambition is to create a game that is both a tribute to the classic and a revolutionary innovation that will push it forward.

The press release reads: “Built as the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox, it will enable players to shape lands, rewrite history and immerse themselves in the Middle Ages like never before. Combining meticulous historical authenticity with unprecedented player agency, this is more than a sequel, it is a rebirth of the historical Total War.”

Interestingly, the studio also talked about the game engine they apply, revealing that Warcore is the next evolution of their proprietary engine. It will be a fresh foundation for games and capabilities to build on, but it has also been designed with console gaming in mind. Total War will be released on PlayStation and Xbox.

Medieval: Total War was the second game in the series to arrive in 2002, following the Japanese setting of the original game. Four years later in 2006, Medieval II: Total War was released, so two decades passed between games that visited this turbulent period of European history.

Honestly, it’s been a long time since a full-fledged Total War had a historical setting. Total War Saga: Troy and Total War: Pharaoh were smaller-scale experiences, so the last mainline game will be 2019’s Three Kingdoms. This is a fantastic war game in Total War: Warhammer 3 that recently launched in 2022.

Speaking of which, support for the game continues – Total War: Warhammer is celebrating its 10th anniversary – with the Lords of The End Times Pack, which will release four fresh Legendary Lords for the Immortal Empires campaign in summer 2026, along with the free End Times Update.
