I’m only 52 days older than PlayStation, having been born on October 11, 1994. As such, my memories of Sony’s first console are, to put it mildly, hazy – more like individual snapshots captured in my brain than an actual moment. I remember hit after hit. These are the kinds of memories I have with the PS2 as I approached my teenage years.

Still, I have a few memories in my memory bank while I was learning to walk, talk, and go to school. Perhaps the most rich is when my family and I celebrate our birthdays by playing the PS1 adaptation of the game The weakest linkstarring nasty Anne Robinson as host, recreated in PS1 pixels. I remember that my Aunt Katie did a great job answering the quiz questions that night.

Another memory I can recall from my PS1 days is Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. My parents actually banned me from playing this game because of the violence (but I was allowed to play GTA, so come up with that), so I repeatedly watch the opening CGI movie over and over again, excited to play it one day. This is one of the reasons why I was disappointed with the recent remake of the game; what happened to the iconic opening?!

Compared to my colleagues, unfortunately, I don’t have that many memories related to PS1. I was simply too newborn to recognize and understand the comfort my parents had for me; that love will come with the PS2 console I received as a Christmas gift – it’s probably still the best gift I’ve ever received. Still, in those early years of my life, I somehow managed to get my hands on a copy of Metal Gear Solid. I now have the same copy in my room, considered my favorite game of all time. I have no idea how I got MGS at such a newborn age, but thank God I did.
