Tony Todd, the voice of Venom in Spider-Man 2 and many other roles, dies at the age of 69

Tony Todd, who voiced, among others, Venom from Spider-Man 2, died at the age of 69. Deadline was the first to report this news.

Todd has appeared in numerous roles throughout his long career dating back to the 1980s, including Platoon, Final Destination and Star Trek: The Next Generation, where he played Worf’s long-lost brother, Kurn. Todd’s horror career, which included the title role in 1992’s Candyman, earned him a Lifetime Achievement Award at the New York Horror Film Festival.

Todd recently starred in Insomniac’s Spider-Man 2, and we talked to him about embodying the essence of Venom ahead of last year’s release. Todd also suggested that Insomniac only used 10 percent of his character’s dialogue, sparking speculation about DLC that ultimately never materialized.

Insomniac said in a statement released shortly after Todd’s death: “Insomniac Games is devastated by the death of our friend Tony Todd. He brought so much joy to our studio during the production of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and to many fans around the world thanks to his unique voice and presence. We are Venom… forever.”

Other fans also paid tribute to Todd, calling him a “horror legend” as well as a great character actor. Bloody Disgusting Editor-in-Chief John Squires wrote: “The loss of Tony Todd is a monumental loss to the world of horror. One of the greatest creators of all time. We say this often. Horror icon. Horror legend. He embodied it all. Every movie he was in was better. A true member of this horror family.

One of Todd’s final roles will be in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, where he will play Locus, a thief featured in one of the sections we saw in our hands-on trailer last month. It will be released on December 9.
