How did Wordle start?

Wordle started as a compact family game created by software engineer Josh Wardle. He created this game so he and his partner could play a fun word game together during the pandemic, and they quickly realized there was something special about this basic guessing game. So after some polishing, Wardle released it publicly on his website: The language of power.

The game was released in October 2021, and by the end of the year, it was played by two million daily players. It became a viral hit, thanks in gigantic part to the ease with which players could share their scores in a spoiler-free manner on Twitter and other social media sites. In January 2022, Wardle accepted an offer from the New York Times to acquire Wordle for a seven-figure sum. Well done, Mr. Wardle. Good job indeed.

Most tiles have a Wordle grid with punctuation marks instead of letters and a red cross throughout the image.
You you can enter any words you want, but remember that the actual answer will never be a rude word.

Are any Wordle words not allowed?

You can type virtually any five-letter word in the English language and Wordle will accept it as a guess. However, the answer is selected each day from a much smaller list of more common five-letter words. Of course, there are still thousands of possible answers, but that means it will never be as unrecognized a word as, say, “THIOL” or “CAIRD” or “MALIC” (yes, these are all real words).

There are very scarce words that the New York Times chooses not to publish as today’s response to Wordle, perhaps for reasons related to breaking news or politics. For example, shortly after news broke that Roe v. Wade might be overturned in the United States, the NYT decided to change the word in its March 30 issue from “FETUS” to “SHINE” because it seemed that the word “fetus” was he added the word too politically in the context of recent events.

The New York Times is also careful never to let what it considers rude be the answer to Wordle’s riddle. But of course, nothing stops you from using even the dirtiest words as guesses, provided they are words accepted in the dictionary and if you realize that they will never become the answer.

Is Wordle getting too uncomplicated for you?

If Wordle is starting to get too uncomplicated, there are a few ways to make the game harder for yourself. The first choice is to enable difficult mode. You can do this on the Wordle website by clicking the gear icon in the upper right corner of the screen. Hard Mode means any letters highlighted have to be used in all future guesses. This stops you from using the typical tactic of picking two words like “OUNCE” and “Pain” to test all five vowels early.

You can take your game to the next level by playing with the so-called “ultra-hard” rules. This means that every guess you enter have to potentially be the answer. If you were playing on difficult mode and typed “MOIST” and the letter “O” appeared in yellow, there would be nothing to stop you from adding “POLAR” as the next word, even though it couldn’t be the answer because you already knew that “O” is in the wrong place. If you play by the “Ultra-Hard” rules, this is not allowed. You need to stick to every clue and make sure every word you enter is potentially an answer.

If Wordle is still too uncomplicated for you, you can always try one of the many other Wordle-inspired online games that have emerged over the past year. One of our favorites is Worldle, where you have to guess the country of the world based on its shape. There’s also Waffle, which involves swapping letters in a filled grid to complete all the words; Moviedle, which shows the entire movie in a compact time and challenges you to guess the movie within six tries; and Quordle, where the task is to solve four words at once with the same answers.
