How to play
Connections is one of the most popular (and demanding) daily puzzle games published by The New York Times. The purpose of the connections is to group 16 words of the day for four groups, in which each group of four words has a common topic.
For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter” and “Wendy” are the characters of Peter Pan. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go” and “Stick” are all words that often appear just before the word “drawing”.
Your task is to find out what these topics combine different words together – but be careful, because for a lot of time there are disingenuous combinations with red herring placed only to lose you! To win the game, you need to find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. During the fourth error, the game ended and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in the puzzle every day is also attributed to a different color, which represents how uncomplicated or arduous to find a connection. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (uncomplicated), blue (medium) and purple (the most arduous).

What is today’s response to calls?
Here is the answer to today’s connection puzzle on Sunday, February 23:
- Yellow: Rub together (mushroom, grilles, grinded, scraped)
- Green: Ways to keep food (can, ferment, freezing, marinade)
- Blue: Breakfast spices (butter, heated sauce, jam, syrup)
- Purple: Spilled proverbial items (beans, guts, milk, tea)
This is one tasty puzzle. As the only food category, it was uncomplicated to separate yellow words from the rest, but the other topics took me some time. I was quickly “milk”, “tea” and “grains” (as coffee beans) as a potential group, but I could not find the right fourth member. For some time I thought the “syrup” because you can put it in your coffee, but this quartet seemed too loosely connected. Instead, I put “jam” and “syrup” as potential connections.
Only one close look at the other words and the green group was complete – it was quite uncomplicated, but at the beginning I missed “Can”. Green words had a fairly clear distinction from blue and purple, because they are methods of maintenance, with “marinade” the only word that can also count as food.
What made it arduous for me was the presence of “hot sauce” in breakfast spices. This is probably a personal matter, but I would never consider it a product “related to breakfast”. Do people really utilize heated sauce in the morning? Well, every day you learn something novel with these puzzles! Regardless, I was able to solve the final categories, simply grouping spices (without having to link with breakfast) and noticing the proverb – suddenly I saw “spilling beans/tea/guts” when I started combining the last group together.
