How to play
Connections is one of the most popular (and demanding) daily puzzle games published by The New York Times. The purpose of the connections is to group 16 words of the day for four groups, in which each group of four words has a common topic.
For example, the words “Hook”, “Nana”, “Peter” and “Wendy” are the characters of Peter Pan. Or to take another example, “Action”, “Ballpark”, “Go” and “Stick” are all words that often appear just before the word “drawing”.
Your task is to find out what these topics combine different words together – but be careful, because for a lot of time there are disingenuous combinations with red herring placed only to lose you! To win the game, you need to find all four connections without making 4 mistakes. During the fourth error, the game ended and the answer is revealed automatically.
Each of the four groups in the puzzle every day is also attributed to a different color, which represents how simple or tough to find a connection. These colors are: yellow (easiest), green (simple), blue (medium) and purple (the most tough).

Here is the answer to today’s connection puzzle on Thursday, May 8:
- Yellow: Commit to paper (author, composing, pen, write)

Although in retrospect it seems obvious, yellow and green groups were not clear to me. My initial connections included “Write” and “Black Black”, as well as “Pen” and “Pencil”. I even thought about “Bond”, “author” and “write” for a second, but then I told myself to snail-paced down and first look for more obvious matches.
Re -focusing on “Write” and “author”, I quickly realized that I could match four similar verbs if I added “pen” and “compose” the group – thus excluding a rather misleading “pencil”. The solution of the yellow theme left me with a rather obvious connection between the scoreboard and the pencil, which meant that I suspected the theme of the DICE game, but as a player Nie-yahtzee I was not 100% sure.
It’s good that James Bond and John Wick were still there, so I could first solve the blue group and then risk the bone motif. You don’t have to bother with purple today!
