The fresh No Man’s Sky adventure is a space horror where instead of dodging space pirates and mysteriously cute aliens, the edges of reality are open to get you. The action of The Cursed, which premieres today, takes place on the threshold of reality, in a place called the land of twilight. It looks very nice – much nicer than the dead planets I invariably encounter when I return to the game every six months or so.

What does this mean in practice? This means that scary things are everywhere, but also, maybe this isn’t actually the case. Because your exosuit is now equipped with an Anomaly Suppressor, which keeps you sane and thus likely protects you from the worst aspects of unreality. This module requires maintenance, and if you don’t take care of it, all the peaceful octopuses floating in the sky will start attacking.

Travel is also restricted: instead of moving between star systems using hyperdrive technology, you’ll have to apply an “ancient portal network” as you travel around the galaxy, following the orders of mysterious, haunting voices whose motives are unclear. As for No Man’s Sky, it sounds like a fun guided game.

Completing it will give you rewards: some decorative posters for your base, a base piece for the Anomaly Seal, which doesn’t do anything in normal No Man’s Sky but looks nice, an ink-stained jetpack mark, and – my favorite – a bioluminescent companion.

This is the 16th No Man’s Sky expedition, which will last until November 7. It follows the Aquarius update which added fishing to No Man’s Sky.
