This is Project Ethos, a roguelike, er, hero shooter from the fresh studio of the co-founder of Sledgehammer Games and 2K

2K has announced Project Ethos, a fresh “3-person roguelike hero shooter” – yes, here’s another one of them – from 31st Union, a studio led by Michael Condrey, co-founder of Call of Duty studio Sledgehammer Games, which doesn’t do the Callisto Protocol.

If you need a quick refresher, prior to the creation of 31st Union in February 2019, Condrey worked on a number of CoD titles that were hits at Sledgehammer, so he brings plenty of shooting pedigree to the project.

If you look through screenshots and recordingssince this is, you know, a hero shooter, I can’t promise you that Overwatch Tracer won’t have your brain repeating the words “Cavalry ‘is” or start thinking about the entire Concord Saga, as unfortunately happens with the state of development of any game of this genre that looks like this one will be released in 2024. But the thing is, just because one game had a tough time doesn’t necessarily mean it will be different.

The game will be immediately free to play, so there’s a difference between it and Concord, and it’s still being advertised as something that’s “in development,” so it doesn’t seem like it’s going to be too imminent, although within There will be a community test in the next few days, from October 17 to 20. Details about this can be found Here.

Project Ethos has an extraction mode called Trials, which seems to be about what you’d expect for something like this – stay longer and you’re taking risks, but you have a chance at better rewards. The roguelike element involves random selections of power-ups that can change your character’s attacks and abilities and can be obtained through matches. I assume you earn it well by shooting people.

We’ll have to see what Project Ethos evolves into and if it can escape the bad vibes of the Overwatch-style hero shooter that’s coming to the lineup in 2024. We hope it’s popular enough that people won’t make jokes and try to re-introduce it to the market after the premiere.
