The modern Humble Bundle has me stunned for the incredible value it offers for a minimum of $10: Humble Detectives Pack is a collection of delightful detective, mystery, and assassin games from the last few years.
The bundle includes the movie-themed mystery Immortality, the serial killer thriller Killer Frequency, the fantasy world of shadowy secrets Paradise Killer, the cosmic horror Call of Cthulhu, a double dose of pixelated jokes The Darkside Detective and its sequel A Fumble in the Dark, and the suicidal crime thriller Overboard.
Honestly, the $10 price tag for many of them is pretty compelling.
Immortality received a uncommon 95% rating from PC Gamer upon its 2022 release, with reviewer Kaile Hultner calling the collage of found footage that creates actress Marissa Marcel’s mystery “Sam Barlow’s best, most thought-provoking game yet, and Half Mermaid’s tumultuous debut.”
The very different Paradise Killer received 91% reviews for its neon-soaked, picture-perfect world where everything goes terribly wrong. Reviewer Funké Joseph said it was a “new standard for the detective genre” that had “a few vaporwave bangers.”
On the other hand, Darkside Detective was called an enjoyable, entertaining game by writer Samuel Roberts, aware of its pop culture leanings. He said it was “endearingly ironic” and “warmly funny and unconventional, like a detective sitcom that isn’t trash.”
There’s also the “reverse murder mystery” Overboard! here, from renowned studio Inkle. What writer Andy Kelly called a “deliciously bad twist” on the detective genre, sees you support protagonist Veronica escape punishment for her husband’s murder.
