Since it’s Halloween, here’s a surprise for hardware enthusiasts: Meltgate!
See, I knew you’d be terrified. Yes, the 12VHPWR and 12V-2X6 connections have been a source of concern for many of us since their introduction as we continue to receive reports of the strange melting incident. However, Thermal Grizzly claims to have an answer for 12V-2X6 connectors WireView Pro II The monitoring device is designed to monitor every single pin to check for potential contact problems.
Despite this, even some well-installed connectors have been reported to be exceeding temperatures and melting of pinsso it’s definitely worth considering whether you want additional insurance strapped to your graphics card. The device is currently in its second batch of pre-orders, which means if you order now, it won’t likely arrive until behind schedule January next year.
It’s not too far away though, and while the connector will have to fend for itself by then (double check it to make sure it’s seated properly if you haven’t already), sometimes it’s better to be protected than sorry.
Alternatively, you can choose Ampinel, a similar device that goes a step further and actively distributes the load across the connector to ensure that no pin is overloaded.
There seems to be a diminutive industry emerging around the ashes of Meltgate (sorry), so you now have options to consider or the thought of your GPU connection going up in smoke will keep you up at night. Now that I think about it, my Halloween costume this year really should be a melted RTX 5090. Sigh. Someone remind me before Halloween 2026.
