The release of Squirrel With A Gun on PC was celebrated with an all-day show of real squirrels doing typical squirrel things in someone’s garden

Squirrel with a gunthis game about squirrels with guns, is coming to PC today, August 29th, and its creators decided to celebrate by letting their Steam page host a day-long live stream, or real squirrels playing. As of this writing, the game is still going forceful and it’s pretty chilly.

If you haven’t been up to date, Squirrel With A Gun has gone from being a game that was just the subject of witty Twitter videos a few years ago to now being released on PC and consoles. It’s exactly what you expected it to be, while also offering some platforming elements that you might not have expected.

To celebrate the day the game releases on Steam and the Epic Store, its creators decided to host a live-streamed party for real-life squirrels, with the facilitate of a YouTube channel called Backyard Buddies, which basically looks like they’re doing the whole Springwatch thing by letting you watch the animals just live their lives. Yes, call your aunt and uncle who have 15 million bird feeders and adopt hedgehogs, gaming is for them now.

We’ve embedded the stream below so hopefully you can watch it yourself, but there are places where the squirrels can play, and there are little plastic guns in them, because it’s a video game. In the one I’m watching right now, there’s a toy car with an assault rifle that’s next to a bowl of food, and the stream cuts back and forth between that and a larger garden area with a bunch of food stops—one of which is next to a revolver—and a huge sniper rifle.

In general, the squirrels seem to be quite nervous about the presence of firearms and just do normal squirrel things, which is pretty chilly. For example, I just saw one sniffing another right where its tail meets its butt. The other squirrel didn’t seem too elated about it, so it ran away. Ah, nature.

Since, as far as I know, Steam developer broadcasts like this aren’t stored anywhere after they’re over, one can only hope that at least the highlights will be made available somewhere for future generations.
