Obsidian Entertainment has released a modern trailer for The Outer Worlds 2, with the not-too-surprising news that their RPG sequel will also be coming to PlayStation 5, as well as Xbox Series X|S and PC in 2025. Oh, and the first day of the game of Pass, of course.
That’s right, the concept of Xbox exclusivity for this game has been pushed to the outside world, although in this case it makes perfect sense. Microsoft acquired the studio in 2018, but chose not to buy out the publishing deal with Private Division that allowed The Outer Worlds to be released on multiple platforms on PS4, Xbox One and PC. The Outer Worlds 2 was released on Xbox, but…. well, Xbox is effectively giving up platform exclusivity. It is unclear whether this will be a simultaneous release, but there is nothing to suggest fleeting exclusivity in this case.
The Outer Worlds 2 will largely mimic the tone and style of the original, but promises to be bigger and broader on almost every level. There’s a modern colony to discover in Arcadia, home to jump technology, which you explore as a modern Earth Directorate agent, trying to find out if it’s responsible for all the vast and terrifying rifts that threaten the entire galaxy.
There are various factions vying for power that you will have to lead, balancing what comes down to church, state and capitalism, and just like in the original, you will have a huge influence on events. Well, anyway, it depends on the skills you choose and how you perform on skill tests and interviews.
You’ll be able to recruit a crew of companions to support you on your adventure, which will follow all the tropes of party RPGs where you’ll make decisions, some of them won’t like them, and then remember that you made them.
The Outer Worlds 2 will appear this month in the Secret Level anthology on Amazon Prime Video, and the episode dedicated to this universe will debut on December 17 and will include a miniature story taking place between the events of The Outer Worlds and The Outer Worlds 2.
This is not the only game from Obsidian that will be released next year. Be cautious with the more solemn fantasy RPG adventure Avowed coming out in February. The Outer Worlds 2 will be a nice tonal companion!
