The official app for Sony’s PS VR2 headset has just landed on Steam. The PlayStation VR2 app will launch on August 6, a day before the official adapter required to run everything is released.
This PlayStation VR2 App Page on Steam (noted by TechRadar) says of the app: “Enjoy VR games and apps on Steam with your PlayStation VR2! Install the PS VR2 app to use PS VR2 on your PC, set up your PS VR devices, and keep your PS VR2 headset and PS VR2 Sense controller firmware up to date.”
The document also states that a PlayStation VR2 PC Adapter is required, which will be sold separately starting August 7. 60$/60€/50£. It’s basically a breakout device that turns a single USB Type-C cable from your VR headset into DisplayPort, power, and USB.
Your computer must meet certain minimum requirements to run PS VR2. These are:
Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit / Windows 11 64-bit |
Editor | Intel Core i5 7600 / AMD Ryzen 3 3100 (Zen 2 or later required) |
Aries | 8GB |
Graphics Card | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1650 (Turing or later required) / AMD Radeon RX 5500 XT |
DisplayPort | DP1.4 |
USB | Direct connection only |
Bluetooth | BT 4.0 (some BT adapters may not work) |
By 2024 standards, everything is pretty effortless. The GPU requirements are particularly low, significantly lower than the power of the PS5. However, to make PS VR2 work, you’ll need some pretty fresh architectures on your PC. That’s Turing, RDNA, or newer on the GPU side; or Zen 2 or newer if you’re using an AMD processor. This all likely stems from what the PS VR2 was originally designed for: a Zen 2/RDNA 2-powered PS5.
It should be noted that some features available in PS VR2 will remain exclusive to PS5. These include HDR, headset feedback, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback. However, you will benefit from PS VR2’s high-resolution graphics and foveal rendering.
