The number of games announced for 2025 is already overwhelming

2025 is looking increasingly — overwhelmingly — filled with gaming.

This makes sense, as 2024 may be remembered as a strange and uneven year for video games. Gaming people prefer older, consistently popular games such as Grand Theft Auto 5, Fortnite, CounterattackAND Minecraftjust as game developers are reckoning with longer development windows, rising budgets and an unstable gaming industry rocked by layoffs.

This does not mean that 2024 was the year bad year for video games. On the contrary. Lovers of the medium have enjoyed great things from the AAA scale (Dragon Dogma 2, Helldivers 2, Like a dragon: infinite wealthAND Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown) to surprises at the independent level (Balatro, Pacific Drive, PalworldAND Animal well). This year’s best games won the hearts of millions thanks to their fresh approach to classic genres.

But 2024 will still likely feel worse – barring any major ones yet to be announced in the second half of the year – compared to the deluge that will come in 2025. Next year alone will Nintendo and Rockstar Games attempt to replicate the successes of their most popular products of all time: Nintendo Switch i Grand Theft Auto 5.

New Nintendo console and the long-awaited premiere Grand Theft Auto 6 for many video game fans, this alone may be enough for an entire year. Nintendo is said to be working strenuous to expand its library of next-gen games for “Switch 2,” reportedly delaying the launch of modern hardware to ensure customers have great software next year. In other words, expect a long list of great modern Nintendo games to arrive alongside the modern console in 2025.

When it comes to GTA6after reaching 200 million in sales in 2013 GTA 5it’s secure to say that Rockstar will have a built-in audience expecting a massive, generational change to the game – and that audience will undoubtedly receive dozens, if not hundreds, of hours of gameplay.

Here’s what else these massive launches will be competing against in 2025:

  • Pokémon Legends ZAa modern Pokémon Legends adventure that will take fans through to the 10th generation of the series
  • Wild monster huntersa huge improvement to Capcom’s growing open-world Monster Hunter series
  • Sid Meier’s Civilization 7another installment in the great strategy series that diehards have been playing for thousands of hours
  • Fairy talethe first modern Fable game in over 14 years
  • Doom: The Dark Agesthe return of the Doom Slayer and hopefully a minor course correction for the shooter
  • Marvel 1943: Rise of the HydraWorld War II cinematic ‘Black Panther vs. Captain America’ game from Uncharted game designer Amy Hennig’s modern studio
  • Death Stranding 2: On the Beachanother great adventure led by Hideo Kojima
  • Peepholethe successor to BioShock from Ghost Story Games
  • 2XKO by Riot Games and Fatal Fury: City of Wolves from SNK, two modern massive fighting games

In the last week without E3 and Summer Game Fest, even more games were announced for 2025: Koei Tecmo Dynasty Warriors: OriginsForced games’ South of north, Medley, Fallen Wuchang feathers, Bust, Mound, and others. They will join previously announced games Paralysis, Little Nightmares 3AND Kill Spire 2 in an incredibly crowded year that’s only going to get more crowded.

These games that can consume hundreds of hours of our free time are just the ones we know about. They’ll be competing for our attention in one of the busiest movie release schedules of the last decade – and it all means a very steep and competitive year for entertainment. There are much worse problems.
