The next installment of Orcs Must Die is coming next year with a roguelite twist

Published:

The Orcs Must Die series will get a sequel next year Orcs Must Die – Death Trapwhich will be the fifth game in the series from developer and publisher Robot Entertainment. In the recent version, players, either alone or in a team of up to four, will battle incoming waves of enemies in third-person action gameplay. This time, players will “evolve through rogue-lite progression” as they defeat hordes of orcs.

The reveal trailer showed off four different characters: a crossbow-wielding elf, a magician with a wand, a lady with a gun, and a large, furious bear. “Each hero is tailored to different playstyles and can work independently or with complementary heroes to provide versatile and powerful orc-smashing action,” Robot Entertainment said.

Be careful

While it sticks to the wacky comedy and mix of third-person shooting and melee combat that made Orcs Must Die popular, the twist in Deathtrap is that “no two runs” will be the same. Increasingly arduous waves of orcs will come with “random buffs and debuffs that affect your hero, traps, weapons, stats, and the levels themselves.” Between waves, players can push forward for greater rewards or retreat to their bases to power up.

“We are thrilled to present the latest installment in the Orcs Must Die! series,” said Patrick Hudson, CEO of Robot Entertainment, in a press release. “Our goal has always been to push the boundaries of fun and creativity. With Orcs Must Die! Deathtrap, we took on the challenge of innovating the thirteen-year-old series by listening carefully to our fans and their requests. We stayed true to the classic chaotic action and light-hearted tone while introducing four-player co-op, new and versatile heroes with deeply unique abilities, expanded level variety, and new rogue-lite progression options. This game aims to deliver the most exciting orc-slaying experience yet.”

Styled after Orcs Must Die!, the indie series has been around since the first game was released in 2011. Each installment has been developed and published by Robot Entertainment, with the latest game in the series being 2020’s Orcs Must Die 3.
