The latest poster for Super Mario Galaxy has a Super Mario Odyssey vibe

Published:

We just got a look at the brand modern poster for Super Mario Galaxy and it captures the vibe of… Super Mario Odyssey?

The modern poster released today shows Mario and Luigi standing in what is undoubtedly the Sand Kingdom of Super Mario Odyssey, complete with the Inverted Pyramid, Tostarena and Tostarenans buildings inspired by the Day of the Dead.

We knew the Sand Kingdom would appear in the Super Mario Galaxy movie in some way, as we saw briefly in the trailer revealed earlier this week. In a miniature shot, we saw Mario and Luigi riding their motorcycles through the desert in the outfits they’re wearing above, before shooting down a dune to reveal the same inverted pyramid in the valley below.

But at the time, it seemed like it was just part of a larger set of areas the brothers could visit on their adventures around the galaxy. Dedicating an entire poster to him raises questions about whether the Super Mario Galaxy movie can meaningfully incorporate elements of the Super Mario Odyssey story. Will we see more kingdoms? Maybe Cappy?

That said, both the Super Mario Bros. movie and what we know about this modern sequel play brisk and loose with the Mario games they borrow from. Super Mario Bros. movie was full of references and didn’t really follow the loose plot (like we currently have) of any particular game, and we already know that in the Super Mario Galaxy movie Bowser Jr. will be a prominent villain, along with Super Mario Sunshine’s brush. We even suspect he’s using the Miracle ability from Super Mario Bros. Wonder!

The latest trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie gave us a ton of modern information about the film, including two modern actors joining the cast: Brie Larson as Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr. Still waiting to see Yoshi in action though.

The Super Mario Galaxy movie will hit U.S. theaters on April 3, 2026
