How do you like your survival games? The pleasure of chopping wood while the birds chirp? Picking mushrooms while deflecting the blows of a little goblin? Stumbling through a parched desert as scorpions sting your ankles with deadly venom? Well, Enshrouded may provide some or none of these experiences, but its latest update captures their spirit. You’ll now be able to choose from several difficulty settings to ease or diversify the challenge of the game. Beyond that, there are recent customization options and a few quality of life improvements.
There are now four default settings across all game modes (single player, co-op, dedicated servers): Default, Relaxed, Hard, and Survival. Default is recommended as a first task for recent players, Relaxed is for those looking for a still time building a base, Hard increases the number of enemies and makes them more tough, and Survival is “for those looking for a punishment with additional survival mechanics on top of more aggressive enemies.” We’re talking about starvation and dropping your backpack upon death – fun.
What’s cold is that each of these modes can be customized to give it a personal touch. Enemy damage, boss health, buff duration, and many other things can be toned down or up. The developers mention a “starvation mode” if you’re feeling particularly masochistic.
Elsewhere, there are recent improvements to blocking and parrying, as well as better transitions between weapon changes. Crafting menus now have larger preview images, and changes to their layout make them easier to navigate. Several points of interest have been reworked, and recent locations have been added to Blackmire and Kindlewastes, including temples, caves, and enemy camps.
In our Enshrouded review, Ollie believes the game offers the best building in the survival genre and says it’s definitely worth playing: “If Enshrouded appeals to you despite its early access quirks and underwhelming premise, you’ll find a solid foundation for a game that I think could one day become one of the most popular and thoughtful survival-crafting games out there.”
