If you grew up with PS1, you’ll remember Battle Arena Toshinden.
Whether you actually owned one of the 3D brawlers or not, we bet you’ve checked out a box of it on store shelves. This is quite a cult series from the 32-bit PlayStation era.
And now it’s set to return, courtesy of Tokyo-based developer Edia, who licensed the intellectual property from the owner Takara Tomy.
While it hasn’t announced specific platform plans, it does say it aims to port all three PS1 titles to “modern” consoles, which will almost certainly include the PS5. It is essential to emphasize that this will be independent of Sony’s emulation efforts.
Edia has a forceful track record of porting retro games, so you can expect up-to-date conveniences and solid emulation in all areas.
As you’ll recall, the original Battle Arena Toshinden was a PS1 game and was considered a rival to SEGA Saturn’s Virtua Fighter 2 at the time.
It was ultimately overshadowed by Tekken in the PS1’s 3D fighter space, but it was still a very early indication of what Sony’s fresh console could achieve.
We’ll be interested in replaying the trilogy, which Edia says will be released sometime between fiscal year 2026 and 2027.
We hope that the developer will also include a lot of bonus content, such as manga and anime adaptations of the series, which will be frosty unlockable extras.
