The hunt continues: CD Project Red has finally started production of the next Witcher game (which probably won’t be The Witcher 4)

That’s right folks, you can finally start counting down the days until the next Witcher game, as production at CD Projekt Red has finally started.

Don’t get too excited, because it’s almost certainly years away, but for those of you who are desperately hoping for some updates to The Witcher, you finally have something tasty: the director of the next Witcher game has confirmed that production has started as part of Project Polaris (the so-called codename of the next installment of the popular RPG series). “I am thrilled to announce that Project Polaris has entered full-scale production!” – wrote Sebastian Kalemba on his personal Twitter account. “With new challenges just around the corner, it is these talented and hard-working people who make me confident that together we can make the upcoming Witcher Saga an extraordinary experience. There’s no point in stopping! Stay tuned to find out what’s on the other side of the coin!”

That last line refers to the photo linked to the tweet seen above, showing several coins lying on a stone floor. Of course, if the game has only just started production, we still have a good few years before we can play it. How many years? Don’t ask me! I don’t have a vague idea, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed for all Witcher fans that at least this decade will pass (it’s about five years until the next one, but we all remember what happened until Cyberpunk 2077, right).

One significant thing to note about the upcoming sequel is that it seems unlikely that it will immediately be The Witcher 4. Next year will mark a full decade since The Witcher 3’s release, and with such a long development time games are being created to be open to novel players, even if they are sequels (just look at Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and how little it relates to Breath of the Wild).

The voice of Geralt himself even said that the next one will not be about the main character of the series, although he does not know who it will be about. When the sequel was revealed, it was even noted that it was the beginning of a novel saga, so it’s sheltered to say that it would start more or less over again. I’m sure we’ll find out more when CD Projekt Red is ready to show more.
