The head of Epic Games says the company is now in good financial shape after laying off more than 800 employees

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney says the company is now in “financial health” after a tumultuous year that, announced last September, saw the company lay off approximately 830-870 employees. This is despite the efforts of Fortnite and Unreal Engine developers billions in revenues during the transition period and is estimated to grow by an additional 30% next year. Sweeney made these comments yesterday at Unreal Fest 2024, as he reported GamesIndustry.biz.

Additionally, Sweeney revealed that Fortnite hit a modern peak during the holiday season, reaching a frankly astonishing 110 million monthly energetic users. Released in 2018, the undeniably enduring game attracted nearly 45 million players in a single day thanks to Fortnite OG.

The roughly 16% job cut comes during a period of transition for a company that has (admittedly) been very successful in capitalizing on Fortnite’s initial explosive growth and continued dominance. Nowadays, as IGN Chronicles Epic Games is more interested in the lower margins but much safer returns that its content creation platforms and revenue sharing with users allow. During Unreal Fest, Sweeney crowed, “I’m happy to tell you that the company is in good financial shape and that Fortnite and the Epic Games Store have reached new records in terms of simultaneous collaboration and success.”
