The Game Awards confirm that Elden Ring (and any DLC) is GOTY eligible

Published:

The Game Awards 2024 gala will take place next Monday announces the list of nomineesselected from ballots submitted by video game publications, including ballots from us at Polygon. Today Geoff Keighley and company issued clarification regarding the nominees’ eligibility. While the rules previously did not explicitly prohibit nominations for video game DLCs and expansions, some may have incorrectly assumed that DLCs would not be considered for these awards.

In an update posted today to FAQ on The Game Awards websitea modern question arises: “Do DLCs, expansions and remakes/remasters qualify?” Here is the answer:

The aim of the Game Awards is to annually recognize the best original and technical work, regardless of the content’s release format. Expansion packs, modern game seasons, DLC, remakes and remasters are eligible in all categories if the jury determines that the modern original and technical work is worthy of nomination. Factors to consider include the newness of the content and its price/value.

We’re not sure if Shadow of Erdtree will not receive a GOTY or other nominations – we could have predicted this earlier Elden’s Ring in the “Best Ongoing Game” category (where parent games with unique DLC and expansions are usually nominated, allowing these additions to be recognized). Now it could end up anywhere. As for the DLC itself, we really liked it.

Adjustment: A previous version of this story incorrectly suggested that The Game Awards voters may not have been aware of this rule. According to a source at The Game Awards, voters were informed of this before casting their ballots.
