The future of PC gaming will be powered by artificial intelligence – AMD confirms FSR 4 machine learning for 2025, which will debut in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6

AMD has confirmed that it is working closely with Activision to provide the FSR 4 scaling tool Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 in 2025 – further clarification on the alleged transition to artificial intelligence in FSR.

The information comes from Team Red vice president Jack Huynh video presenting the modern Ryzen 7 9800X3D (spoiler: the rumors and spec leaks we reported earlier this week were true). In addition to the modern chip, Huynh confirmed AMD’s plans to further optimize FSR 3.1 Black Ops 6. The AMD vice president then mentioned working with Activision to bring “the next generation of ML-powered FSR” to the long-running shooter franchise next year.

We’re still waiting for more information on how the modern AI-powered FSR 4 will perform – especially compared to DLSS and now PSSR, which specifically employ AI to augment resolution, while AMD has so far avoided using AI in FSR. According to Huynha, portable gaming PCs will see significant improvements in battery life thanks to AI-based frame interpolation.

While this could dramatically improve the power efficiency of notebook computers, it’s also potentially great news for desktop gamers who employ mid-range GPUs. Fluid Motion Frames (AMD’s frame generation software) has already improved frame rates and reduced latency in many games, and with AMD’s full focus on machine learning in FSR 4, we can expect a performance boost in both FMF and the upscaling tool itself.

Will this lend a hand AMD GPUs compete with Nvidia CPUs?

It is clear that frame generation and AI scaling are becoming the main factors in ensuring a glossy gaming experience on PC. Nvidia’s DLSS consistently outperforms AMD’s FSR, which is most likely one of the draws for the RTX 4000 series for PC gamers (since next-gen DLSS 3 is only available on RTX 4000 cards).

With the next generation of scaling technologies on the horizon, this is a great opportunity for Team Red to compete in the GPU market – high-end GPUs are no longer in the spotlight, so FSR 4 could be the savior needed to provide powerful but affordable hardware performance for mid-range and budget cards.

If AMD’s CES 2025 lineup reveal is exact, we could see the brand putting up a huge fight in the GPU department, but also making an absolute splash in many other next-gen hardware arenas… watch this space, folks.
