The free-to-play PvP shooter Highguard will be released in January

Highguard is a recent PvP raid shooter from the creators of Apex Legends and Titanfall that combines weapons with magic and delicate horse riding. You play as a Ranger who must fight for the Shield Breaker, which in turn allows you to penetrate the enemy’s base.

The rest of the game is being kept under wraps, but from the trailer it looks good, and while the characters’ character designs are impressive, they seem to fall into clichés. Maybe one day we’ll get a hulking, snarling, muscular brute who’s actually a wizard with long-range attacks, rather than a rage-filled melee animal.

The trailer also shows off some of the hero abilities, they are appropriately flashy and spectacular and remind me of the supers from Destiny 2. In fact, some of them seem very similar, the animations are very similar, but I guess there are only a finite number of ways to wave your arms to cast a spell.

There is some horse riding, but you can also ride a bear (I have no idea) or a panther. Also included is what appears to be a medieval version of the Thundertank from Thundercats. The only thing that made me wince while watching the Highguard trailer was the blonde screaming “Bring the heat.” This phrase has been used so many times in video games that it’s fucking cheesy.

The game is free to play, which should make for a decent start, but the F2P shooter world is already full of games like RedSec, Fortnite, Overwatch 2, and COD Warzone, and we’ve seen many games try and fail to break into this market

Highguard will be released on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC Couple Will you sing to play on January 26, 2026?
