Although we will get a Gears Of War prequel in Gears Of War: E-Day, this means that Gears Of War 6 will not be made yet. In a recent episode of the IGN Unlocked podcast, former Gears Of War director and current Diablo 4 leader Rod Fergusson revealed what his plans were for Gears 6 after he left. In brief, he was going to take the game to space. Bright.
When asked for his thoughts on Gears Of War going the prequel route, Fergusson said that it was ultimately a “really smart” decision, even though it wasn’t in line with his original plans for Gears 6. Then, of course, he was asked what those plans were.
“I was just getting us out of Sera, so Gears 6 was going to leave Sera,” Fergusson said. Sera is the planet where Gears takes place, all locusts and in a very bad place. He then shared how the story will center around the Union of Independent Republics missile technology seen in Gears 5.
While I think the Gears story needs a shake-up, I don’t know if the above “we send it elsewhere” approach would do a good job of tying everything together. If there’s anything that needs changing in Gears, it’s definitely the characters. I wish the show would ditch the uninteresting JD Fenix and company and give us a more compelling lineup without leaving Sera out. Maybe they’re not even COGs. Maybe we’re leaning more towards the survival horror that the original did so well? I think there’s a lot more to see in the Series before you start introducing aliens.
