Happy Paintings, creator of amazing RPG Maker titles Fear and hunger AND Fear and Hunger 2: Terminarecently spoke about the third game in the series and its possible directions. You’ll be elated to know that They are as radical as the changes between the first two parts.
ON TwitterHappy Paintings recently published some of their thoughts on the subject, Fear and Hunger 3 may ultimately be. In an almost chilling statement, he manages to make the second game sound like it’s all sunshine and rainbows compared to the destruction to come. “If F&H1 it was about creation, F&H2 was about the cluttered growing pains and changes that came with that creation — and then getting too close to the circle, and then the inevitable destruction that wipes the slate neat. How do you destroy a franchise on a meta level, too?”
Fear and Hunger 3 they will move even further away from the “established” system
Destruction is a large theme when it comes to the beloved series, and fans wanted to know what Happy Paintings meant by that. Understandably, one player thought it might mean the third game would be set in a post-apocalyptic world, but that’s not the case.
Happy Paintings explained, “No, I don’t want to do apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic stuff, that’s an oversaturated trope at this point. Only destroyed on a meta level and maybe on a personal level for the character.” This tells me that each character’s backstory, and potentially even the type of soul they have, will reflect the destruction of their lives before players meet them in-game.
The developer also goes so far as to make an extremely bold statement about Fear and Hunger 3 can do with the fan base. “I’m mostly on my own with some extra support with some stuff from time to time. That’s where I’m at right now. I don’t have plans for that far in the future. F&H3 it will probably reduce the fan base to 10% and I don’t know if I’m still interested in it Food and drinks then?”
When asked why the game might reduce its fan base, he explained that “F&H3 this is something that no one is asking for and will probably deviate from the “established” Food and drinks gameplay.” He adds that the game’s store, structure, and aesthetic will be completely different, and he expects that to result in negative reactions from some fans.
First Fear and hunger is very much a dungeon crawler. It’s a brutal game with deep mechanics and doesn’t hold your hand. As you master it, you’ll progress further and unlock the secrets of its gameplay systems, multiple routes and endings, and story.
The second game uses a very similar combat and exploration system, but the story, world, and structure are completely different from the first. Players are thrown into a battle royale against other participants in the murky god festival, which really opens up the potential for dozens of games in the distant future of this deeply disturbed world.
No one can predict where the third one will be Fear and hunger game will go. Based on the evolution between the first two titles, one would expect a contemporary setting, but it would make just as much sense if the action took place 1,000 years in the future or the past.
Given the popularity this series has gained over the past few years, it sounds crazy for Happy Paintings to say they might not be particularly interested in it after the third title is done and dusted. But maybe when you’re creating a series that has the potential to go on and on, you just want to know there’s an end point.
